Music video of the day

Watch on Youtube

The mellow jam master goes toe-to-toe with SNL star Andy Samberg in the music video for “At or With Me,” the second single off To the Sea, which also stars Andy's best friends and Lonely Island compadres Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Jack has just climbed up my cool rating at least 10 steps. Vegan cookies all around!

Art 21

1. Robert Adams
I am fascinated by his photography! He spends hours and hours taking a photo of one tree but he makes absolutely beautiful. His respect for nature shows in his photos and I love it.

2. Ida Applebroog
Her digital manipulations are something I've never seen before. Well I have seen something similar in commercials but never like this. She makes them into real art. Taking photos of blobs and creating people out of them with hair and faces. It is completely fascinating! And I love how she acknowledges that some people are disturbed by some of her photos but she thinks that's good too.

3. Kara Walker
Her silhouettes are quite...different...for lack of a better term. She is amazingly talented and while her pieces are not quite my style I can definitely understand what she is saying with them. What I love about her style is her use of projectors and having the audience be apart of the art by having their own shadows project onto the walls with her silhouettes.

4. Laurie Simmons
I wish I could properly convey how much I love her way of thinking. It is so refreshing to see a photographer like her that knows they want to make magic when they snap a photo. She can take pictures of toys and tiny sets and make them come to life and make people believe they are real places and real life size things. So amazing. I really would like to see her entire film "The Music of Regret". It just looks really interesting and I love that she took her photo ideas and turned them into so much more! Plus she got Meryl Streep to be in it and she is the freaking queen of everything!

5. Barry McGee
What I love about Barry is that he stays true to the idea of graffiti. He knows that for every piece he creates in his studio or on walls indoors he should do 110x that outside to show that he is still true to his roots. I really respect that about him.

6. Sally Mann
I've never actually watched collodion photography be performed so to watch her process is truly remarkable. She brings back the notion of art is for fun. Sometimes I feel like that is lost in this society so it is refreshing to see a photographer that uses such old methods and uses them for fun.

7. Josiah McElheny
I've loved glass blowing since I was a kid and his is just breathtaking. But out of all his works I am absolutely in love with his Mirrored Glass Works. The infinite stretch of reflections and the fact that you don't even have to see yourself while looking at it is so brilliant! Just really all around beautiful.

8. Arturo Herrera
I love making collages. Almost as much as I love taking photographs. So Arturo's art is something I'm very fond of. He uses so many mediums to create an image it is just fantastic and then he turns those pieces into photographs and they become an entirely new piece of art and ugh I am just so in love with how he does it!

A photo show where exposure has two meanings

source of article

The Pingyao International Photography Festival, located in Pingyao, China, is by far the biggest festival of its kind. With 2,200 photographers from around the world the whole city was lined with some of the most amazing photographs seen today. The location, however, seems to be a danger for prints. Some of the photographers have learned over the years that water proof laminated prints are the way to go for these kind of showings but there are other photographers who, even inside, could not properly protect their photos. This year's PIP festival was their 10th anniversary which just ended on Saturday. PIP has an everyone is welcome kind of attitude and now I hope that someday I too will be able to show my work here.

Make like a tree and check this out

Meticulous leaf carving artwork from Nature’s Art.
Natural leaf carving is actual manual cutting and removal of a leaf’s surface to produce an art work on a leaf. The process of carving is performed by artists using tools to carefully remove the surface without cutting or removing the veins.
There’s even a step-by-step leaf carving tutorial [pdf] if you desire.

Stop what you're doing and watch this acoustic cover of the day

Watch on Youtube

Brother and sister duo Dylan and Lauren spotted an “open mic” sign outside the OxJam tent at Electric Picnic 2010, and went right on in without hesitation to ask for a slot. Rightfully so because I can sense some great things for these two.

I'm surprisingly symmetrical

This is me. Please excuse my face.

I took my good side and turned it into both my sides. I am more symmetrical than I thought.

This one looks funny haha. Not as good as the last one but it strangely makes me look more like my dad.

Next time won't you sing with me?

Toronto Film Festival 2010 (Coming from a photographer who is addicted to movies)

Source of article

Just after the Cannes festival the Toronto Film Festival is one of the highest praised in the movie industry. Usually showing some of the movies that go on to win Oscars in February. This year the festival showed an outstanding 258 films! More than any other this year so far. The two most anticipated movies so far are two of my most anticipated movies as well. "Black Swan" and "127 Hours" have shined through in just about every festival they have been shown at. At first when I had heard that Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis were going to star in a film together I immediately started counting down the days before I even knew what the movie was about. Two of my girl crushes together on screen? Yes please! And then I saw the trailer and I am already in love. It looks creepy and beautiful and just like my type of movie!
But on the lines of creepiness this article touches on how now a days movies are showing more and more human suffering. Whether it be mental or physical you almost always see some sort of suffering that makes you cringe in movies...except for in Disney movies of course, but even then I'm sure we all cringed when Andy decided to give away the toys.
Are movies that display grotesque things in the name of art really art or just an excuse to display the directors disturbing mind? In my opinion...it will always be art. No matter how grotesque the images are. One persons nightmares are another persons entertainment. It just gets us into a horror debate and some of the movies I'm talking about aren't even considered horror. For instance one of the movies shown directed by Michael Rowe called "Leap Year" is about a lonely Mexican woman who partakes in brutal one night stands and then when she finds her perfect man she encourages him to subject her to sexual violence. Something that had the article writer saying, "It's hard to care about the filmmaker's intentions when you're watching yet another fiction about a woman's brutalization and, as important, watching another actress exploited under the rubric of art."
However considering that these type of movies are honestly not widely seen very often it is almost refreshing to see a movie that strays away from the mainstream idea, especially in a society that has way too many romantic comedies for its own good.
All in all I fully believe that the Toronto Film Festival is an amazing place to see some breathtaking films and even though some may be spotlighted more than others I truly agree with this article that it will forever remain an essential platform for movies.

Some of my favorite self portrait artists

1. Katie Lee

Katie has to be by far my favorite self portrait photographer out there right now. All of her work is just absolutely stunning and speaks volumes about herself. She is a California based photographer and I discovered her on Flickr one day while I was searching their interesting photos from that week. She just recently had a baby and so most of her work has been spread out and less of herself but even when she takes pictures of her baby you get a real sense of who she is.

2. Loren Carlile

I actually went to high school with Loren and while I didn't know her well I love getting to see her pictures online. She takes some amazing self portraits and I will forever be jealous of them.

3. Cindy Sherman

I think what really draws me to Cindy's work is that she has this amazing ability to make her self portraits look like they were grabbed right out of a movie. It really really fascinates me!

4. Rosie Hardy

Rosie is another photographer I discovered from Flickr and her self portrait never cease to amaze me! She is based in England and I'm not sure if she ever says exactly where but I do know that she comes to America a lot and got accepted to Glasgow. She does a lot of post production in photoshop and there has been a lot of arguing whether that makes her a photographer or just someone who works with digital graphics. Either way she takes these pictures of herself beautifully and knowing how to edit them to get the picture you want is all apart of the game as well.
