Rest in Peace our Elisabeth Sladen

I have just come across the tragic news that Elisabeth Sladen, best known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith on Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures, has passed away today at the age of 63 due to complications from cancer.

I have seen nothing but incredible sadness all across the internet. From huge DW nerds to the quiet fans who never really talk much about the show. Everyone has felt this death.

Personally I never got the chance to watch SJA or anything else Elisabeth did but Sarah Jane was such a huge part of DW. Not only was she a companion to The Doctor back in the 70s but she got to come back in the new series and finally have some closure with him. They finally got to say goodbye to each other.

She was Sarah Jane. She was our Sarah Jane. And today is just going to be an incredibly sad day.

Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat paid his tribute.
“‘Never meet your heroes,’ wise people say. They weren’t thinking of Lis Sladen,”

Here is some fan art I have seen today in memoriam.

Art Project of the Day

While some people collect stamps or go fishing, Microsoft Games artist Claire Hummel has been using her spare time to draw historically accurate depictions of Disney princesses.
She just put the finishing touches on Jasmine, which she says was complicated by her “knowing veeeery little about pre-Islamic Middle Eastern clothing,” but nothing a few days of research couldn’t mend.
Check out the rest of the series here.

Museum Art of the Day

MOCA’s “Art in the Streets” — the first major US museum exhibition dedicated to street art — opens to the public this Sunday, and will remain open through August 8.
Among the familiar pieces stretching all the way back to the dawn of graffiti-based vandalism are new and original pieces from the likes of Os Gemeos and Banksy (above).
My Modern Met took some photos during Thursday’s press opening which you can see here.
