Harry Potter debates still happening

Today as I was expressing a frustration I had with the first part of the 7th film in the Harry Potter franchise I got into a long debate with my best friend on whether or not Lord Voldemort actually intended to make 7 horcruxes or not.

I was always under the impression that he did indeed want to make 7 but had not made his 7th one before attempting to kill Harry for the first time and therefore had unknowingly made Harry into the last horcrux. I could honestly be mistaken in this assumption but oh well.

What I do know for sure is that in the movies Dumbledore had told Harry he believed there to be 7 horcruxes. Two had already been destroyed by the time this conversation had happened and it was now up to the trio to find and destroy the rest. After Ron destroyed the locket he looked up at Harry and said, "Well at least we only have three left." Obviously Ron can't do simple math. Since I believe they knew they were looking for 7 and they had only destroyed three so far then they actually have 4 left. This is where our debate started.

Lauren does not believe they knew they were looking for 7. She believes Tom Riddle only ever had he wanted to split his soul into 7 parts. Which would make 6 horcruxes and then the soul he had left in his own body. I believe he said he wanted to split his soul 7 times. Which would add up to 7 horcruxes. Either way the movies differ from the books and so Dumbledore telling Harry exactly how many horcruxes there were in the 6th movie may just be a total fluke.

My point in this long boring post is that almost 4 years after the last book came out and only 2 months away from the very last movie I find myself still participating in debates over what happened. It's refreshing and slightly annoying. More refreshing actually considering it has been a long time since anyone has really wondered over what was going to happen.

I guess I need to read the books and watch the movies for the gazillionth time to prove who is right. Please don't twist my arm.
